What Are Patents, Trademarks, Servicemarks, and Copyrights?

The difference between patents, copyrights, and trademarks can be confusing sometimes. Although there may be some similarities among these kinds of intellectual property (IP) protection, they are different and serve very different purposes.

What Is a Patent?

A patent for an invention is the grant of a property right to the inventor, issued by the Patent and Trademark Office. The term of a new patent is 20 years from the date on which the application for the patent was filed in the United States or, in special cases, from the date an earlier related application was filed, subject to the payment of maintenance fees. April 22 is Earth Day. Started 32 years ago, Earth Day was designed "to shake up the political establishment and force [the environment] onto the national agenda," said founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. senator from Wisconsin. 3. Protect our oceans: get the facts and learn if something is "fishy". The crisis in the world's oceans is staggering — 70 per cent of the most valuable marine fisheries are either over-fished or fished to the limit. Marine ecosystems are under further stress from destructive practices, such as cyanide and dynamite-fishing, and from "bycatch" of non-target species that claims as much as 29 million tons of fish, seabirds, turtles, and marine mammals every year. To help protect our oceans: • Be an informed consumer of fish and other seafood. Ask where the fish you are purchasing comes from and the status of the fishery. • Do not purchase Chilean sea bass. Both Patagoniam and Antarctic tooth fish are marketed as sea bass. Illegal fishing will result in commercial extinction of these fish in the Southern Ocean within two or three years. • Avoid purchasing over-exploited stocks such as Atlantic swordfish, wild-caught Atlantic salmon, and sharks. These fish take a long time to reach breeding age, so their stocks have been depleted quite rapidly. By not buying them, you can give their numbers a chance to recover in the wild. •Avoid products from fisheries with excessive levels of bycatch. Animals like shrimp (wild and farm raised), scallops (wild), and oysters (wild) tend to have large amounts of bycatch associated with them, so they should be avoided if possible.WWF's Endangered Seas Programme website has more information on WWF's work on protecting our oceans, including the Stop Overfishing or Fishing Will Be Over Campaign.

4. Reduce your impact on global warming and climate change As pollution increases, so does the world's average temperature. Global warming forces rapid changes in human and animal habitats. To help turn down the heat on the planet: • Replace standard light bulbs with energy-efficient flourescent bulbs • Choose the best energy-saving models when you replace windows • Install low-flow showerheads that use less water • Whenever possible, walk, bike, carpool or use public transport • Insulate walls and ceilings and save about 25 per cent of home heating bills. WWF's Climate Change Programme website has information on the causes of climate change, as well as on WWF's work on preventing global warming and climate change.

5. Reduce your use of toxic chemicals Toxic chemicals can now be found in trace amounts in virtually all creatures and in all environments. Once in the environment, toxic chemicals can travel great distances, persist for many years, and grow more concentrated in living things as they move through the food web. Make informed consumer decisions: • Buy organically grown (pesticide free) fruits and vegetables, cotton clothing, and other goods. • Stop using pesticides. Eczema is an itchy inflammation of the skin associated to a varying degree with other features such as:

redness of affected areas of skin

signs of superficial infection such as weeping or crusty deposits.

Eczema is divided into a small number of subgroups based largely on the factors that may be most important in causing eczema in any one individual, but it is important to recognise that the symptoms and appearance of the skin in all these types can be exactly the same.

Also, the classification system is far from perfect as it is often difficult or impossible to accurately say what causes eczema to occur in any one person.

The lines of treatment of the different types of eczema are also similar. The main differences are to do with the particular factors causing an individual’s eczema.
